As the lighting changes on this piece so do the shadows; only when the lighting conditions are exactly the same as where and when it was created will the shadows create a mirror image of the wing-shaped base. This piece was an evolution of a line project that became an artistic representation of how fragile our ecosystems are, and how as soon as you change one thing you can't get it back to the how it was before. The story that re-directed where I was taking this piece, and lead to the finished version seen here was about the changing of the water flow out of a local reservoir to allow steelhead to pass the dam, bringing them back into a fishery that has been without steelhead since the dam was built. However, routing surface water from the reservoir down stream has increased the water temperature of the river, which may result in the steelhead not even entering the river, let alone migrating above the dam, because they can only live in colder water. Only time will tell for the steelhead, but the Mayfly hatch happened a month earlier this year as a result of the warmer water temperature...change one thing, and who knows what all of the trickle down changes that may result!

Or maybe it should be called "The toppling of our economy!"; the stone-like look and well-muscled physique give an appearance of strength and the ability to endure. However, the inability to adjust to the changes at hand due to blind ambition for greater profits (represented by the stiffness of the body as it begins to fall), combined with the lack of government regulation on poor business practices (like AIG being allowed to insure against loss on jumbo loans made up of high risk contracts!?!) and it is no surprise that the economy collapsed, just like the plaster failed from just a little bit too much internal pressure.

"The African Connection"
This collection of works was completed while living in Tanzania and was inspired by the tribal peoples of East Africa, including the Maasai and the Dinka, as well as by my anthropological curiosity in how the future of these peoples is being decided. While in Africa there were many discussions about the impacts of globalization, the impact of colonialism and foreign aid on the self worth of the indigenous peoples, whether economic progress equals a better way of life for the masses, and how often decisions are being made based on a Euro-American approach rather than looking for solutions that make sense from a local way of thinking.
Working in Papier Mache was a new experience, and in a way was an embracing of the limited resources available to create with; none-the-less, the vision of creating long, thin, Giacometti-like sculptures fit very well with both the inspiration and the medium.
